Solar Photovoltaic

Solar photovoltaic systems convert sunlight directly into electrical energy that can be used in your home or business. Photovoltaic installations are simple and unobtrusive and involve very few parts or materials.

Each photovoltaic (or PV) cell is made from layers of semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced. It is important to note that PV panels work using light, not heat, so even on a cold day they are effective. The UK climate is more than sufficient to power an efficient PV system.

The electricity produced by the panel flows into an inverter (usually installed in the attic or roof space) that converts the electricity from DC to AC, enabling it to be used within the building. We also install isolator switches (for safety reasons) and an electricity meter to record how much electricity your system is producing. It is this meter that will calculate how much money you will receive from the feed-in-tariffs.

The electricity produced is then circulated around the house. Any excess electricity that you do not use can either be sold back to the National Grid at an agreed rate, or stored in a battery for later use.

PV panels have no moving parts, so they do not degrade over time. They require little or no maintenance and will generate electricity on even the coldest winters day.

Benefits

Scissors

Cut your carbon footprint

Solar electricity is green, renewable energy and doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) or other pollutants. A typical home PV system could save around 1200 kg of CO2 per year - that's around 30 tonnes over its lifetime.

Light Switch

Cut your electricity bills

Sunlight is free, so once you've paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be greatly reduced. A typical home PV system can produce around 40% of the electricity a household uses in a year.

Globe

Sell electricity back to the Grid:

If your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can't use it, someone else can use it - and you could make a bit of money.

Graph

Feed-in-tariffs make solar PV systems a significant form of investment

Returns of 8-10% can be expected from a well situated 2kw system, with a payback period of less than ten years.
